释义

Saurian.

Brit. /ˈsɔːrɪə/, U.S. /ˈsɔriə/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymon: Latin Sauria.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Sauria, order name (W. Ross & J. Macartney 1802, translating Cuvier Lect. Compar. Anat. I., Table III; < ancient Greek σαῦρος (also σαύρα ) lizard (see -saurus comb. form) + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix2), after French Sauriens (A. Brongniart 1799, in Magasin encyclopédique VI. 197).The scientific Latin order name was also used in the masculine form †Saurii (1801 in Ann. Med. 2nd Lustrum 1 237).
Zoology.
With singular agreement: an order or suborder of reptiles, originally comprising lizards and crocodiles, but later redefined, usually by restriction to the lizards alone. With plural agreement: members of this group collectively. The paraphyletic suborder that comprises the lizards is now more commonly called Lacertilia. Later writers have also used the name Sauria variously for groups including both lizards and snakes, or for a large clade encompassing lizards, crocodiles, and all the descendants of their common ancestor (including dinosaurs and birds).
