Etymology: < saskatoon n. + berry n.1
The fruit of the shrub or small tree Amelanchier alnifolia (family Rosaceae), which is a small purple pome with a sweet, nutty flavour used as a source of food, originally by North American Indians. Also: the shrub itself, which is native to northwestern North America and has toothed, oval leaves and white flowers. Cf. saskatoon n.Also called Juneberry, service-berry.
