Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < a variant of saucy adj.1 (with the β. forms compare sassy adj.1), although if so the semantic motivation is unclear; or perhaps < a language of Liberia (compare Temne ε-sasa , Mende sasa kind of poison, Temne ka-sas , denoting the sasswood tree, and also Krio sasa medicine used in oath taking). With sassy bark n. at sense 2 compare Krio sasebak.
