Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin Satanismus ; Satan n., -ism suffix.
Etymology: Originally (i) < post-classical Latin Satanismus satanic behaviour or disposition (1557 or earlier), satanic doctrine (1559 or earlier; also Sathanismus) < Satan Satan n. + -ismus -ism suffix. In later use also partly (ii) < Satan n. + -ism suffix. Compare earlier Satanist n.In sense 2 after satanic adj. (compare sense 3 at that entry); compare slightly later Satanist n. 2. With sense 3 compare French satanisme (a1857 in this sense; 1842 in sense ‘state or fact of being satanic’).
