单词 schlemiel
释义

schlemieln.

Brit. /ʃləˈmiːl/, U.S. /ʃləˈmi(ə)l/
Forms: 1800s– schlemiel, 1800s– schlemihl, 1800s– shlemiel, 1900s– shlemiehl, 1900s– shlemihl.
Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish shlimil.
Etymology: < Yiddish shlimil ( > German Schlemihl (19th cent.)), probably < Shelumiel (Hebrew Šĕlumī'ēl), the name of a person in the Bible (Numbers 1:6).It is unclear how exactly the figure in the Old Testament and Hebrew Scriptures came to denote a blunderer. Talmudic writings identified Shelumiel with Zimri, a Jewish man who had sex with the Midianite woman Kozbi (Numbers 25) and was subsequently killed by Phinehas. The proximate source is probably the Jewish folk tale about a man called Schlemihl, said to have lived in the 13th cent., whose wife became pregnant after he had been away on a journey for eleven months, and who was then made to believe that he was the father of her unborn child. The tale was popularized by Adalbert von Chamisso's Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte (1814).
colloquial (originally and chiefly in Jewish usage).
An awkward or clumsy person, a blunderer; a habitually unlucky person; a foolish or pathetic person.
