Origin: Probably formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: Joe Schmo n. at Joe n.2 Additions.
Etymology: Probably short for Joe Schmo n. at Joe n.2 Additions (although this is first attested slightly later).The alternative suggestion of a shortening < schmuck n. poses phonological problems. See further the discussion by D. L. Gold in Amer. Speech (1988) 63 278–9.
