Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French satifier, satisfier.
Etymology: < Middle French satefier, satifier (13th cent. in Old French), variant of satisfier satisfy v.Apparent later occurrences, such as the following, probably show typographical errors for satisfy v.:a1623 W. Pemble Fiue Godly & Profitable Serm. (1628) i. 10 The godly many times are here besotted, who to satifie some one vnmasterly desire, will hazard the peace and comfort of their soules.1662 M. Mead Pastors Valediction 20 Spiritual peace will never be obtained, if communion with God be not maintained; that gives comfort in the midst of all sorrows, and satifies all doubts, and recompences all wants.1798 T. transitive. To satisfy (a person, a desire, etc.).Described in N.E.D. (1909) as ‘Still locally used in Scotland, in the form settifee’ (see also quot. 1903), however later evidence is lacking.
