Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Savanilla.
Etymology: < Savanilla (Spanish Sabanilla ), the name of a port in Colombia, South America, from which the root and the drug made from it were once exported. Compare savanilla n.2
Now disused.
In full Savanilla rhatany. A medicinal preparation made from the astringent root of the Central and South American plant Krameria ixine (see rhatany n.). Also: the root itself.

Origin: Probably a borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish sabanilla.
Etymology: Probably < American Spanish sabanilla (1945 or earlier) < Spanish sabalo sabalo n. + -illa , feminine diminutive suffix (see -illa suffix). Compare sabalo n., and also savanilla n.1
U.S. regional (Texas). Now rare.
The tarpon, Megalops atlanticus, a large marine fish. Cf. sabalo n.
