单词 sanglier
释义

sangliern.

Forms: α. Middle English synglere, Middle English, 1600s singuler, 1600s, 1800s singler; β. 1500s sangleir, sangweler, 1500s–1600s, 1800s sanglier, 1500s, 1700s sangler.
Etymology: < Old French sengler, sangler, sanglier (modern French sanglier ) = Provençal singlar-s , senglar-s , Italian cinghiale , cignare < Latin singulārem solitary (see singular adj.), used substantively in late Latin (Vulgate Psalm lxxix. 14 after Greek μονιός in the Septuagint) for a boar separated from the herd. The forms synglere, singler show normal phonetic development from early Middle English *sengler, < Old French sengler; the form singuler is due to assimilation to the Latin.
Obsolete.
A full-grown wild boar (see quots.).
