Forms: Also Middle English sanycle, 1500s sanickle, 1500s–1600s sanikell, (1600s sanikl, 1700s sanicula).
Etymology: < Old French sanicle (12th cent. in Hatzfeld & Darmesteter; Anglo-Norman c1265 in Wright-Wülcker 553/9), < medieval Latin sanicula, saniculum, probably < Latin sānus healthy, with reference to the healing powers formerly attributed to the plant. Compare Spanish sanicula, Portuguese sanicula, Italian sanicola, German sanikel (late Old High German sanikela).
1. The umbelliferous plant Sanicula europæa (more fully wood sanicle). Also, in extended sense, any plant of the genus Sanicula, as S. marilandica, the black snakeroot.
