Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French satiné.
Etymology: < French satiné (adjective) that resembles satin in touch or look (1603), (noun) red wood of an evergreen South American tree (although this is apparently first attested later: 1890; more fully bois satiné (1748)), use as noun of past participle of satiner satin v.The use as noun in sense B. 1 does not appear to be paralleled in French. In sense B. 2 the wood is so called on account of its satiny lustre.
