Etymology: < scientific Latin Sciurus, genus name ( Linnaeus Systema naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) I. 63): see below) + -ine suffix1, after either scientific Latin Sciurini (1825 or earlier) or Sciurinae (1791 or earlier), former family names (now names respectively of the tribe and subfamily to which squirrels belong).The genus name scientific Latin Sciurus is < classical Latin sciūrus squirrel < Hellenistic Greek σκίουρος squirrel < ancient Greek σκιά shadow (see scio- comb. form) + οὐρά tail (see uro- comb. form2).
