Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Schnitzel.
Etymology: < German Schnitzel escalope (19th cent., originally regional (Austria)), specific sense development of Schnitzel small piece that has been cut off, scrap of paper (15th cent. as snitzel , snytzel ) < snitz (see schnitz n.) + -el , suffix forming diminutives (see -le suffix 1).
A tenderized slice of boneless meat which is usually coated in breadcrumbs and fried. Cf. Wiener schnitzel n.
