单词 scotch cart
释义

Scotch cartn.

Brit. /ˈskɒtʃ ˌkɑːt/, U.S. /ˈskɑtʃ ˌkɑrt/, South African English /ˈskɒtʃ ˌkɑːt/
Forms: also with lower-case initial.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Scotch adj., cart n.
Etymology: < Scotch adj. + cart n., so called because the design apparently originated in Scotland. With use in South Africa (earliest in quot. 1845) compare Afrikaans skotskar (1895 or earlier as Schotschekar; compare earlier Skotse kar, lit. ‘Scottish cart’ (1880 or earlier). It has been suggested that this is < German Schuttkarren, lit. ‘rubble cart’, and the etymon of the English word. However, the Afrikaans word is first attested much later and appears earliest as a premodified noun rather than a compound; it is therefore more likely that this is formed after English.
Chiefly South African. Now chiefly historical.
A light, strongly built, springless two-wheeled tip cart, drawn by horses or oxen and typically used for transporting gravel, manure, etc.
