Etymology: Old English byrele , byrle , strong masculine, of uncertain etymology (perhaps for earlier byrel < Germanic type *burilo-z , < beran to bear v.1). The Old Norse byrli ‘cupbearer,’ byrla ‘to pour out,’ were probably adopted < Old English.
Obsolete.
One who pours out drink; a cupbearer, butler.
