单词 scaphismus
释义

scaphismusn.

Brit. /skəˈfɪzməs/, U.S. /skəˈfɪzməs/
Forms:

α. 1500s– scaphismus, 1800s scaphismos (rare).

β. 1700s– scaphism, 1900s skaphism (rare).

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin scaphismus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin scaphismus (1568 in the source translated in quot. 1579, or earlier) < classical Latin scapha boat (scapho- comb. form) + -ismus -ism suffix. Compare French scaphisme (1721 or earlier). In Byzantine Greek this form of execution was denoted by the term σκάϕευσις.
Ancient History.
A method of execution said to have been practised by the ancient Persians, in which the victim was secured within a small enclosed space, such as that formed by the cavities of two small boats placed together, so that only the head and other extremities protruded, and was left to die.In order to ensure a painful and protracted death, the victim was force-fed milk and honey and tormented with insects; the victim would eventually die from dehydration, starvation, exposure, and septic shock caused by putrefaction of the flesh. In quot. 1579 apparently with reference to a different method of execution in which the victim is dismembered, although there appears to be no historical basis for this.
