Forms: 1700s schoerl, sherl, shoerl, 1700s–1800s shirl, shorl, schorl.
Etymology: < German schörl, in the 18th cent. also schierle, schirl, schürl, schurl, schurell, schirlich, schörlich, schorlet, in 16th cent. schrul; of obscure origin. From German are French schorl, Swedish skörl, Danish skjørl.
Mineralogy.
Tourmaline, esp. the black variety. Formerly applied loosely to various other minerals, esp. with prefixed adjective, as in white schorl, a name for albite, blue schorl, hauyne, etc.
