Etymology: < Latin Blem(m)yae, < Greek Βλέμυες, an Ethiopian people, ‘acc. to the fable (Mel. 8), without head and eyes, and with the mouth in the breast’ (Lewis and Short).
A type of medieval carved image (see quot. 1915).
