单词 sciaena
释义

sciaenan.

Brit. /sʌɪˈiːnə/, U.S. /ˌsaɪˈinə/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin sciaena.
Etymology: < classical Latin sciaena a sea fish, perhaps the meagre (Pliny) < ancient Greek σκίαινα a sea fish, perhaps the meagre or the umbrina < σκιά shadow (see scio- comb. form) + -αινα, suffix forming nouns; apparently so called on account of its dark colour.Adopted in scientific Latin as Sciaena, genus name, by Linnaeus Systema naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) I. 288).
Originally: any of several sciaenid fishes found in the Mediterranean (obsolete). Later (in form Sciaena): the genus containing these, once comprising all sciaenid fishes but now restricted to a small group that includes the brown meagre, Sciaena umbra; (also) a fish of this genus.
