单词 blepharo-
释义

blepharo-comb. form

Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek βλεϕαρο-.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek βλεϕαρο-, combining form (in e.g. βλεφαροσπάξ arching the eyebrows) of ancient Greek βλέϕαρον eyelid, of unknown origin (see note); compare -o- connective. Compare scientific Latin blepharo-, French blepharo-, German blepharo- (all attested from the first half of the 19th cent.).It has been suggested that ancient Greek βλέϕαρον derives from an aspirated variant of the stem of βλέπειν to see (see ablepsy n.). Alongside these Attic forms the Doric forms γλέϕαρον and γλέπειν are also attested.
Used in numerous terms of Pathology, etc.: as blephaˈritis n. inflammation of the eyelids. ˈblepharoˌplasty n. the operation of supplying any deficiency caused by wound or lesion of the eyelid. ˌblepharoˈplastic adj. ˈblepharospasm n. spasm of the orbicular muscle of the eyelids. ˈblepharostat n. an instrument for fixing the eyelid during operations in the eye. ( New Sydenham Soc. Lexicon)
