单词 scoter
释义

scotern.

Brit. /ˈskəʊtə/, U.S. /ˈskoʊdər/
Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown.Perhaps compare scout n.5 and also the following:1901 Pall Mall Mag. Sept. 137 Numbers of scoters ('Scoots' the boys call them), the scaup, dive over the cockle scaur. It has been suggested that the name is originally a printing error for *sooter ( < soot n.1 + -er suffix1), a name supposed to have arisen on account of the bird's colour; compare post-classical Latin Anas niger , lit. ‘black duck’ (e.g. in quots. 1673, 1678); German †Rußente, lit. ‘soot duck’, a name for the unrelated scaup ( Aythya marila), is also sometimes mentioned in this context. However, there is no evidence for such a name in English.
Any of several sea ducks constituting the genus Melanitta, breeding in the Arctic and wintering in north temperate regions, and typically having mainly black or dark brown plumage; esp. (more fully black scoter, common scoter) either M. nigra of northern Eurasia or M. americana of North America (sometimes regarded as conspecific). Also scoter duck.surf, velvet scoter: see the first element.
