Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin scotia.
Etymology: < classical Latin scotia concave moulding (Vitruvius) < Hellenistic Greek σκοτία darkness, gloom, in Byzantine Greek also concave moulding < ancient Greek σκότος darkness (see scoto- comb. form2) + -ία -ia suffix1; so called on account of the dark shadow within the cavity. Compare French scotie (a1537).
1. Architecture. Chiefly in classical architecture: a deep concave moulding, esp. at the base of a column; = trochilus n.2In Gothic architecture, the more usual term for such a moulding is a casement n. 1a.
