Etymology: Middle English bleschen , blessen , identical with Middle Dutch blesschen (modern Dutch, and Low German blusschen ) to extinguish or quench, taken to represent a Germanic *bilaskjan , < bi- , be- prefix + laskjan, Old High German leskên to quench, extinguish (Middle High German, Middle Low German and late Middle Dutch lesschen, modern German löschen), causative of Old High German leskan (Middle High German leschen, modern German also löschen) to ‘go out’ as fire. How it came into Middle English does not appear.
Obsolete.
