单词 scillonian
释义

Scilloniann.adj.

Brit. /sᵻˈləʊnɪən/, U.S. /səˈloʊniən/
Origin: Apparently from a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Scilly , Devonian adj.
Etymology: Apparently < the name of the Isles of Scilly + -onian (in Devonian adj. and other formations in -ian suffix on stems in -on). Perhaps compare use of Scillonia denoting the Isles of Scilly, although this is apparently first attested later than the adjective, and may be modelled on it.With the unusual formation perhaps compare Islonian denoting an inhabitant of the Isle of Axholme (an area of raised ground in former marshland) in Lincolnshire (1839 or earlier), and also earlier Abelonian n., pupillonian n., rakehellonian n.
