Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin scincoides ; Latin Scincus , -oid suffix.
Etymology: In senses A. 1 and B. 1 < scientific Latin scincoides, specific name (G. Shaw 1790: see quot. 1790 for scincoid lizard n. at sense A. 1) < classical Latin scincus skink n.1 + -oīdēs -oid suffix. In senses A. 2 and B. 2 < scientific Latin Scincus, genus name ( L. T. Gronovius Zoophylacii Gronoviani (1763) I. 11, J. N. Laurenti Synopsis reptilium (1768) 55) + -oid suffix; compare Scincoidea (1819 or earlier), now a superfamily name, and Scincoidae (1839 or earlier), former family name. Compare scincoidean adj., scincoidean n.
