Etymology: < classical Latin sciss-, past participial stem of scindere scind v. + -i- connective + -parous comb. form, after French scissipare (1824 or earlier).

Originally: (Biology) of or relating to reproduction by means of fission; (of an organism) reproducing by such means; = fissiparous adj.; (now rare). In later use also gen.: tending to split into two quite separate parts; characterized by such splitting.
