单词 blackstrap
释义

blackstrapn.

Brit. /ˈblakstrap/, U.S. /ˈblækˌstræp/
Origin: Apparently either (i) formed within English, by compounding. Or perhaps (ii) a borrowing from Dutch, combined with an English element. Etymons: black adj., strap n.; black adj., Dutch stroop.
Etymology: Apparently < black adj. + strap n., although the semantic motivation is unclear. The second element may perhaps show an alteration of Dutch stroop syrup, treacle (17th cent.; variant of siroop syrup n.). Compare later black stripe n. (a) at black adj. and n. Compounds 1e(a).
1. Esp. in the north-eastern United States: a drink made by mixing a spirit (usually rum), molasses, and (sometimes) beer. Cf. black stripe n. (a) at black adj. and n. Compounds 1e(a). Now historical.
