Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Probably partly a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Probably partly an imitative or expressive formation. Etymon: skirl v.1
Etymology: Probably partly a variant (with metathesis) of skirl v.1, and partly imitative. Compare Norwegian skræla, skråla, Old Swedish skrala (Swedish skråla), early modern Danish skraale, skrole (Danish skraale, (now usually) skråle), all in similar senses.
Chiefly regional.
intransitive. To utter a loud shrill cry or screech; to make a loud, harsh, piercing sound. Also occasionally transitive with direct speech as object.The exact meaning in quot. 1730 is uncertain.
