Etymology: Of obscure origin: probably allied to scut adj. and n.3Connection with Old Norse skut-r stern of a vessel (Norwegian skut either end of a boat), or with modern Icelandic (tóu-) skott (fox's) tail, has often been assumed, but appears unlikely.
