Etymology: < Arabic sabastān, < Persian sapistān. Said to have been originally seg-pistān, lit. ‘dog's teats’. The word is found in several European languages: French sébeste, Spanish sebesten, sebasta, Portuguese sebeste, -a, Italian sebesten.
Botany.
The plum-like fruit of a tree of the genus Cordia (formerly Sebestena); a preparation of this used as a medicine. Also the tree itself. Also attributive.
