screw-barreladj.n.

Brit. /ˈskruːbarəl/, /ˈskruːbarl̩/, U.S. /ˈskruˌbɛrəl/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: screw n.1, barrel n.
Etymology: < screw n.1 + barrel n.
A. adj.
1. Designating a pistol or other firearm whose barrel is unscrewed and removed in order to load the projectile into the exposed breech. Now chiefly historical.Such firearms are typically loaded with a projectile slightly larger than the bore of the barrel. As a consequence, the propellant has to generate enough pressure to deform the projectile before it can pass through the barrel, providing it with considerable kinetic energy.
