The note which lies at an interval of seven degrees of the scale above or (occasionally) below a given note, and is produced by oscillations of twice or half the frequency respectively. Hence (by extension): any of the notes at successive intervals of this size above or below a given note (sometimes called second octave, third octave, etc.).The octave forms the starting point of a new scale of identical intervals but different pitch, and thus has the same alphabetical or sol-fa name as the given note.
