The practice of scribbling, especially the practice of writing quickly or carelessly (cf. scribble v.1 2a). N.E.D. (1911) gave as its only example an 1801 quotation from S. T. Coleridge Letters (1895), but in the more recent edition this has been corrected to Scriblerism (see scribblerism n. at scribbler n.1 Derivatives).
