Etymology: < scrieve v.1 (compare forms at that entry) + -er suffix1.With sense 1 compare Middle Dutch schrīver (Dutch schrijver ), Middle Low German schrīver , both in sense ‘scribe, clerk’ (compare forms of the Germanic parent verb cited at shrive v.).
Scottish after Middle English.
