1825 J. Jamieson Etymol. Dict. Sc. Lang. Suppl. at Skreenge Skreengin,..a mode of fishing, with small nets, during the night, without the aid of torches, on the coast of Argyleshire. This designation has undoubtedly originated from the idea of the efficacy of this mode of fishing, q. scourging the water.
