Etymology: < Latin scrūtātor, agent-noun < scrūtārī to examine, scrutinize, apparently < scrūta plural, ‘old or broken stuff, trash, frippery, trumpery’ (Lewis & Short); the etymological sense of the verb is supposed to be ‘to search even to the rags’ (Lewis & Short).
