Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Probably partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin adjuvant- ; adjuvant adj., -ance suffix.
Etymology: In quot. a1460 probably < classical Latin adjuvant- adjuvant adj.: see -ance suffix. In later use < adjuvant adj.: see -ance suffix. Compare French †adjuvance (a1483 in Middle French and 1799 in two apparently isolated attestations). Compare later adjuvancy n.
Now chiefly Medicine (rare before mid 19th cent.).
