1. intransitive. Of a thing: to destroy itself automatically, esp. when preset to do so. Cf. auto-destruct v.Recorded earliest in attributive use; cf. Compounds.Popularized by the U.S. television series Mission: Impossible in which each episode begins with a secret agent receiving instructions on a tape which subsequently self-destructs (see quots. 19671 and 19672).
