Origin: A borrowing from Latin; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymon: Latin sericterium.
Etymology: < scientific Latin sericterium (1826 or earlier: see quot. 1826), irregularly < Hellenistic Greek σηρικόν silk (see Seric adj.) + -τηριον , suffix forming nouns, after scientific Latin sialisterium salivary gland of insects (also attested in the source of quot. 1826; < Hellenistic Greek σιελιστήριον bridle bit < ancient Greek σιαλίζειν (also σιελίζειν ) to slaver, foam ( < σίαλον saliva (see sialo- comb. form) + -ίζειν -ize suffix) + -τήριον , suffix forming nouns, so called as it tends to be covered with foam). Compare later serictery n.
Entomology. Now rare.
