Etymology: < self- prefix + indulgence n. Compare slightly earlier self-indulgent adj.
The action or an act of indulging or gratifying one's own desires or inclinations, esp. with regard to pleasure or comfort; self-gratification; (also) a thing in which one indulges; a luxury. Formerly also: †regard for one's own interests or well-being (obsolete).Originally with negative connotations, but in later use sometimes with neutral meaning.
