Etymology: < self- prefix + pollination n., originally after German Selbstbestäubung ( F. Hildebrand Die Geschlechter-Vertheilung bei den Pflanzen (1867) 66, the source reviewed in quot. 1872).
Botany.
The transfer of pollen from an anther to a stigma of the same flower or same plant.Often used with the implication of self-fertilization (cf. pollination n.).

1872 W. E. Hart in Jrnl. Bot., Brit. & Foreign 10 25 Hildebrand has shown..that sometimes, where at first sight self-pollenation (a better word, I think, for ‘Bestäubung’, than ‘pollenization’, suggested by Mr. Bennett) seems to be the intention of Nature, this is not followed by fertilization.
1876 G. Henslow in Nature 19 Oct. 544/1 The pistil recovers itself, and its growth is equal to or precedes that of the stamens, the result issuing in a synchronous maturity, and consequently self-pollination.
