1954 L. C. Cole in Q. Rev. Biol. 29 118/1 The writer proposes to employ the term semelparity to describe the condition of multiplying only once in a lifetime, whether such multiplication involves fission, sporulation, or the production of live young.
1975 E. O. Wilson Sociobiology xvi. 338/2 Iteroparity is the optimum strategy if the cost in fitness due to reproduction gradually increases with age, or if the benefit gradually decreases, or both. If neither condition holds, the best pattern is semelparity—reproduction in one large, usually suicidal burst.
1979 Mann & Mills in P. J. Miller Fish Phenology (Symposia Zool. Soc.) vii. 162 It is claimed that increased fluctuations in environmental conditions do not always cause selection for increased reproductive effort and a trend towards a single reproduction in an organism's lifetime (semelparity).
