Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese sencha.
Etymology: < Japanese sencha (mid 15th cent.) < sen- to boil, infuse in hot water ( < Middle Chinese; compare Chinese jiān to fry, to simmer in water) + cha tea (see matcha n.).
A type of Japanese tea made from green tea leaves that have been steamed, rolled, and dried. Also: green tea leaves that are processed in this way.
