Etymology: < Old French cendal, = Provençal zendal-s, sendat-z, Spanish cendal, Portuguese cendal, Italian zendale, sendale, zendado; a Common Romanic word, whence Middle High German zendâl, zindal, modern German zindel. It is probable that the word is ultimately derived < Greek σινδών fine linen, which it renders in Old French translations of the New Testament; but the history of the form is obscure.
