(Also serjeant-at-arms, †sergeant of arms.) †(a) In early use gen.: an armed officer in the service of a lord (cf. sense 1); spec. one of a body of men of knightly rank, originally 24 in number, who were required to be in immediate attendance on the king's person, to arrest traitors and other offenders; (b) an officer of each of the two Houses of Parliament, who is charged with the duty of enforcing the commands of the House, the arrest of offenders, etc.; (hence) an officer having corresponding duties under certain other legislative assemblies, as the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.
