Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: sense n., -ify suffix.
Etymology: < sense n. + -ify suffix. In sense 1 after Italian sensificare to endow with consciousness or sensation (1598 and 1611 in Florio; subsequently in sense ‘to enable (something) to be perceived by the senses’ (late 19th cent.)); compare post-classical Latin sensificare to endow with sensibility (end of the 4th cent. in Augustine). With sense 2 compare slightly earlier sensifacient adj., sensificatory adj., and earlier sensific adj., sensifying adj.
Obsolete. rare.
