Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French serval.
Etymology: < French serval ( Buffon Hist. nat. XIII. (1765) 233) < Portuguese cerval lynx (1683 or earlier; more fully lobo cerval ; with the formation compare French loup-cervier ), specific use as noun of cerval of or relating to a stag (15th cent.; < cervo stag (13th cent.; < classical Latin cervus : see cervine adj.) + -al -al suffix1).Compare scientific Latin serval (1771 as a specific name).
1. Any of several spotted wildcats described as native to South or East Asia or to America (not identified). Obsolete.The Asian leopard cat, Prionailurus bengalensis, may have been one of these animals.
