Etymology: < classical Latin septem seven < the same Indo-European base as seven adj. and n. Compare septi- comb. form1, and also hepta- comb. form.Attested from the 17th cent. in loans from Latin, e.g. septemvir n.; formations within English are found from the first half of the 19th cent.
Forming nouns and adjectives with the sense of ‘having seven parts, sections, etc.; seven in number; sevenfold’. Cf. septi- comb. form1.
