Etymology: < classical Latin septemvir (chiefly in plural septemvirī ) member of the college of priests responsible for the organization of certain sacred feasts, in post-classical Latin also denoting an elector in the Holy Roman Empire (1586 in a British source and in the source of quot. 1606 at sense 1) < septem seven (see septem- comb. form) + vir man (see virile adj.).

A member of a group consisting of seven men or (in later use) people.In early use often with reference to the seven original electors of the Holy Roman Empire; cf. elector n. 3.In later use frequently (in plural) in the name of a court of appeal at the University of Cambridge; cf. quots. 1937, 2015.
