Etymology: Partly (i) < post-classical Latin septennis (late 2nd or early 3rd cent. in Tertullian), variant of classical Latin septuennis seven years old ( < septem seven (see septem- comb. form) + annus year: see annals n.) + -ary suffix1, and partly (ii) < septenn- (in classical Latin septennium septennium n.) + -ary suffix1. Compare earlier septenary adj. 1, septenary n. 2.
